Coming-of-Age ceremony (Hatachi no Tsudoi)(二十歳のつどい)

The Hatachi no Tsudoi, otherwise known as the ‘Coming-of-Age Ceremony’, is an annual event held on the second Monday of January to celebrate young people who have become adults. Although Japan lowered the legal age of adulthood from 20 to 18 on April 1, 2022, Higashihiroshima City will continue to hold the ceremony for those who turn 20 during the relevant fiscal year, following past practice.

During the ceremony, new adults from the region are invited to a large venue, where they receive commemorative gifts and congratulatory messages from the mayor. A representative of the new adults may also give a pledge expressing their commitment upon entering adulthood.

Attire for the ceremony is free of choice. Many women wear furisode (a formal long-sleeved kimono), while men typically wear suits in calm colors such as navy, black, or gray. Some participants wear traditional clothing from their home countries.
