Resident Registration (住民登録)

Resident registration is the procedure by which you declare to the City Office your address within Japan, and details of the people living in the same family (household) as you in Japan, etc. This information is then recorded by the City Office.
After you complete resident registration, you will be able to obtain your certificate of residence when you need it, and take advantage of a range of government services, including enrolling in the National Health Insurance Scheme and the National Pension Scheme (and receiving benefits from these schemes when appropriate), receiving Child Allowance, etc.

Resident Registration(住民登録)

Foreigners legally resident in Japan for more than three months must complete
the formalities for resident registration. These formalities can be completed at the Citizens’ Affairs Division of the City Office.

★ As a rule, you should complete the formalities for resident registration within 14 days of deciding your address within Higashihiroshima City.

If you were not issued with a residence card when entering Japan, your passport.

Documents to prove family relationships

If the head of a household is a foreign resident, official documents to prove the relationship to the head of the household of the person completing the formalities for resident registration are needed. If the documents are not in Japanese, a Japanese translation of the documents (with the translator specified) is also necessary.

Certificates of Residence(住民票の写し)

After you have completed resident registration, you will be able to obtain your certificate of residence when you need it. Your certificate of residence is a certificate issued based on your resident registration.

・Items detailed on the certificate: Name, Address, Family Relationship(s), Nationality, Status of Residence, ‘My Number’ personal number, etc.

・The document can be requested for a person who has (had) an address in Higashihiroshima City.

・As a rule, the document can be applied for by a person shown in the certificate of residence, or a person from the same household.

The information you need on your certificate of residence may differ depending on where the document is to be submitted to. Please contact the office, etc., to which you will submit the document, to confirm in advance what information is necessary.

□ Whose information is needed? (Only the person in question, part of the household, all members of the household, etc.)

□ Is information about family relationships, ‘My Number’ personal number(s), nationality/nationalities, status of residence needed?

One certificate of residence costs 300 yen.
★If the person needing the certificate of residence cannot come to the City Office in person, it is possible to have someone come to receive the certificate on their behalf (a letter of attorney is needed for the proxy), and applications can also be made by post.
