Medical Treatment(医療)

更新日:2023年03月28日

There are various types of medical facilities, including facilities that are open for treatment at night or on holidays, and facilities with staff who can deal with foreign patients.
When you visit a hospital for an examination or treatment, or when you receive medicine, you need to pay.

General Information Regarding Medical Facilities(診療科の種類)

There are various types of medical facilities, in terms of what illnesses, etc., can be dealt with. Some medical facilities specialize in a single area of medicine, but there are also larger medical facilities (general hospitals, etc.) that can treat a wide range of illnesses.
First of all, ask the opinions of the people around you, and choose a hospital close to you depending on your symptoms.

★ In larger medical facilities (general hospitals, etc.), a high initial consultation fee may be payable, or in some cases, you may not be able to be seen unless you have a referral letter紹介状(しょうかいじょう)).
Additionally, there are often many patients, and you may have to wait for a long time.

When You Go to a Medical Facility(医療機関にかかるとき)

Be sure to take your Health insurance card combined with My Number Card with you, and show it at the reception of the medical facility.

Necessary Items

□Your Health insurance card combined with My Number Card
□ A note of your address and phone number, and your main symptoms
※ This will be useful at the reception and when you are examined by the doctor.
□ Your patient registration card for the medical facility you want to use (if you have such a card)
□Your medicine handbook (if you have one)

Medicine(薬)

If you need medicine, the doctor who examined you will give you a prescription(処方箋).しょほうせん

With this prescription, you can purchase the prescribed medicine in two ways:

In-Hospital Prescriptions(院内処方)

Purchase the medicine directly from the medical facility where you were examined.

Out-of-Hospital Prescriptions(院外処方)

Purchase the medicine from a pharmacy outside the medical facility, using the
prescription issued to you by the medical facility. You will need your Health Insurance Certificate (card), as well as the prescription.

Generic Medicine Request Card

If you do not have one of these cards, please obtain one from the National Health Insurance and Pension Division in the City Office.

Generic Medicine

When the patent for a specific type of medicine has expired, equivalent medicine of the same quality can be manufactured and sold at a lower price. This is known as generic medicine. This medicine can be over 30%, or in some cases up to 50%, cheaper, but the efficacy and the safety is no different from patented medicine, so you can use it without worries.
If you wish to use generic medicine, please show your ‘generic medicine request card’ to the doctor who examined you.

Medicine Handbooks(お薬手帳)

Medicine handbooks are a record of the medicine (and doses, etc.) you have been prescribed. If you show your medicine handbook to the doctor examining you, they can check that you are not being prescribed the same medicine twice, and that the medicine you are being prescribed will not cause problems when taken with any other medicine you are taking.
Medicine handbooks can be obtained from medical facilities, pharmacies, etc. in the city.

Staying in Hospital(入院)

If you need to stay in a medical facility for tests, treatment or an operation, you may need to pay a deposit and have a guarantor.
You will need to take sleepwear and personal items such as toiletries. Check with the medical facility what you need.

High-cost medical expense benefit system(高額療養費制度)
