The Long-Term Care Insurance System（介護保険制度）

The long-term care insurance system is a system of social support for the costs of long-term care, by means of insurance premiums, etc. Foreigners living in Japan are required to participate in the long-term care insurance system, and to pay the premiums, if they fall into one or more of the categories shown below. When you participate in the system, you are able to apply to be recognized as needing long-term care, and to make use of care services.
The formalities for enrollment into the system are completed automatically. You do not need to complete any formalities yourself.

You will be enrolled into the system if you fall into one or more of the categories below:

1.You are aged between 40 and 65, living in Higashihiroshima City and enrolled in medical insurance;

2.You are 65 or over, with an address in Higashihiroshima City;

3.Your status of residence is ‘Official’, and it is expected that you will be resident in Higashihiroshima City for at least three months;

4.Your status of residence is ‘Official’, and you have been resident in Higashihiroshima City for at least three months;

※With regard to categories 3 and 4, if you fall into the following categories, you will not be enrolled into the long-term care insurance system.

・You came to Higashihiroshima City to receive treatment, or to look after a person who came to Higashihiroshima City to receive treatment;

・You are staying in Higashihiroshima City for the purpose of sightseeing, etc., or you are a spouse who came with such an individual;

・You came to Higashihiroshima City with the status of residence of ‘Diplomat’;

・You came to Higashihiroshima as a member of the United States military, or as the family of such an individual;

・You fall into one of the categories for exemption.

※You are enrolled into the long-term care insurance system from the month in which you become 40. If your birthday is on the first day of the month, you will be enrolled from the previous month.

For example, if your birthday is October 1st, you will be enrolled into the long-term care insurance system from September.
