Even if you are a foreigner, even if you are a student, if you have more than a certain amount of income in Japan, irrespective of your nationality you are required to pay tax.
There are two types of tax on personal income: income tax, and municipal and prefectural tax. The tax you pay is an important source of income that supports a range of government services, such as welfare, education, roads, disaster countermeasures, garbage collected, etc.
